Participants will deepen understanding the importance of engaging students with phenomena to launch an instructional sequence or storyline. Additionally, participants will review the definition of phenomena, learn about the three different types of phenomena- anchoring, investigative, and analogous- and will be introduced to the shifts in thinking about phenomena & how phenomena relate to student sensemaking. Participants will actively engage in activities to help make sense of what phenomena are and are not and consider the question- how do teachers choose quality phenomena for the Arizona Science Standards?
