Train the Trainer: Preparing to Lead Phenomenon-Driven Task (PDT) Sessions Grades 3-1
This session prepares participants to lead professional learning on Phenomenon-Driven Tasks (PDTs) with teachers in their own schools and districts. Participants first work through a PDT the way teachers will in their sessions, making sense of an unfamiliar, real-world phenomenon by applying core ideas and practices together.
They then step back to look at the session from the facilitator’s side. They examine how the Assessment Plan and Performance Analysis Worksheet are introduced, which facilitation moves help teachers see the difference between a PDT and a traditional test, and where teachers typically get stuck when scoring student work.
Participants practice leading key segments of the session in small groups, give and receive feedback on their facilitation, and talk through how to respond to common teacher questions and concerns.
The day closes with planning time to adapt the session for their own audiences and schedules and to set goals for supporting teachers as they begin giving PDTs in their classrooms..
WHAT PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO DO
• Facilitate a complete Introduction to ADI workshop for teachers
• Model an ADI investigation across all seven stages, Task through Report
• Explain the research base and the instructional rationale behind the model
• Support teachers in creating inclusive, discourse-rich science classrooms
• Anticipate and respond to the concerns teachers raise most often
• Design a professional learning plan tailored to their school or district
WHY THIS FITS ARIZONA
The 2018 Arizona Science Standards ask students to use the Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts to make sense of the Core Ideas. ADI is a classroom-tested model for making that expectation routine: students investigate a phenomenon, construct an argument from evidence, critique one another’s arguments, and then write and revise a report.
Seats are limited to 40. Lunch is on your own.
YOUR FACILITATOR
Dr. Victor Sampson is an Associate Professor of STEM Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Texas at Austin, where he studies how students learn to argue from evidence and how teachers build classrooms where that happens. He is the researcher behind the Argument-Driven Inquiry model, the lead author of the ADI book series, and a co-founder of ADI.
