If science instruction is three-dimensional, assessment should be too. High-quality 3D assessments move beyond recalling facts and vocabulary to asking students to use science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas to make sense of phenomena and solve problems. As the Utah resource emphasizes, high-quality assessment should mirror high-quality instruction and provide students opportunities to demonstrate how their understanding develops and transfers to new situations.
In this 30-minute Administrator Power Session, participants will explore why alignment between instruction and assessment matters. When classroom learning emphasizes sensemaking, reasoning, modeling, discussion, and applying ideas, assessments should provide students with opportunities to demonstrate those same kinds of learning rather than simply recall information.
