Train the Trainer: Introduction to Argument-Driven K-8 STEM Design Challenge
Build the in-house capacity to bring argument-driven engineering to every classroom in your district. This one-day, in-person institute prepares STEM supervisors, instructional coaches, and teacher leaders to lead this professional learning on their own. Rather than sending teachers out for training year after year, you develop certified facilitators who can deliver introductory workshops whenever your teachers need them.
Throughout the day, participants work a three-dimensional STEM design challenge as their teachers would, watch an expert instructor model every segment, and then step back to examine the facilitation moves behind each one. Demonstration is paired with structured reflective discussion, so participants leave understanding not just what to do, but why it works.
Participants are grouped by grade band, elementary or middle school, so every example fits the teachers they will support. Those who complete the day are certified to facilitate Argument-Driven Engineering workshops at their site.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
District and campus K-8 STEM specialists, instructional coaches, CTE and engineering leads, and teacher leaders supporting engineering design in elementary and middle schools. Send two or more people who can facilitate together.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO DO
• Facilitate a complete Introduction to Argument-Driven Engineering workshop
• Model a design challenge across all seven stages, Task through Report
• Help teachers define a problem with measurable design criteria and constraints
• Coach teachers on testing, evaluating, and optimizing design solutions using data
• Support students in arguing from evidence about which solution best meets the criteria
• Design a professional learning plan tailored to their school or district
You walk away with:
✓ The complete Introduction to Argument-Driven Engineering workshop slide deck, fully editable
✓ Facilitator notes with the timing, talking points, and moves behind each segment
✓ Participant handouts, ready to print and copy as often as you need
Seats are limited to 40. Lunch is on your own.
YOUR FACILITATOR
Dr. Victor Sampson is an Associate Professor of STEM Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Texas at Austin, where he studies how students learn to argue from evidence and how teachers build classrooms where that happens. He is the researcher behind the Argument-Driven Inquiry model, the lead author of the ADI book series, and a co-founder of ADI.
