You can build the in-house capacity to bring this supplemental resource, Argument-Driven Inquiry (ADI) to every science teacher in your district. This two-day, in-person institute prepares science supervisors, instructional coaches, and teacher leaders to lead ADI professional learning on their own. Rather than sending teachers out for training year after year, you develop certified facilitators who can deliver Introduction to ADI workshops whenever your teachers need them.

Argument-Driven Inquiry  program builds students essential literacy skills through:

  • reading to gather and evaluate information,
  • talking to share and refine ideas, and
  • writing to explain what they figured out.

Over two days, participants experience a full Introduction to ADI workshop from the inside, watch an expert instructor model every segment, and then step back to examine the facilitation moves behind each one. Demonstration is paired with structured reflective discussion, so participants leave understanding not just what to do, but why it works and how to adapt it.

Participants are grouped by grade band, elementary or secondary, so every example fits the teachers they will support. Those who complete both days are certified to facilitate Introduction to ADI workshops at their site.

Become an ADI Facilitator.  You walk away with:

✓ The complete Introduction to ADI workshop slide deck, fully editable

✓ Facilitator notes with the timing, talking points, and moves behind each segment

✓ Participant handouts, ready to print and copy as often as you need

✓ Certified ADI trainer status and access to the trainer folder, which stays current

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

District and school science specialists, curriculum directors, instructional coaches, department leads, and teacher leaders supporting science instruction in grades K-12. Districts get the most from the institute when they send two or more people who can facilitate together.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO DO

•    Facilitate a complete Introduction to ADI workshop for teachers

•    Model an ADI investigation across all seven stages, Task through Report

•    Explain the research base and the instructional rationale behind the model

•    Support teachers in creating inclusive, discourse-rich science classrooms

•    Anticipate and respond to the concerns teachers raise most often

•    Design a professional learning plan tailored to their school or district

WHY THIS FITS ARIZONA

The 2018 Arizona Science Standards ask students to use the Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts to make sense of the Core Ideas. ADI is a classroom-tested model for making that expectation routine: students investigate a phenomenon, construct an argument from evidence, critique one another’s arguments, and then write and revise a report.

Seats are limited to 40. Lunch is on your own.

YOUR FACILITATOR

Dr. Victor Sampson is an Associate Professor of STEM Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Texas at Austin, where he studies how students learn to argue from evidence and how teachers build classrooms where that happens. He is the researcher behind the Argument-Driven Inquiry model, the lead author of the ADI book series, and a co-founder of ADI.
