Personal information that you’d like people to know: I have been teaching for 12 years and I am also the Key Club advisor and 21st Century Community Learning Center Coordinator for my school. I enjoy being involved in my campus and in our community, making it a better place for all students and their families to learn and grow.
One of your favorite science activities: I am a big fan of inquiry and project based learning, I have had my students design bridges, rockets and erosion control methods. THey have also discovered the geology and mineral resources of various World Cup Qualifying countries in order to determine how those minerals were made, and how much they impact the economies of those countries. All discovery based activities are huge hit with my students as they allow them to take ownership of their ideas, and figure out ways to create solutions, and also to find methods that don’t always work. This is essential to the learning process and understanding how Science truly works and it is a joy to see my students learn and succeed this way!
Why I want to serve ASTA – I want to serve ASTA by increasing the resources and reach of ASTA that is provided to the rural schools of Arizona. So much focus is put on the Phoenix Metropolitan area, and I would like to see more of the conferences and professional development opportunities brought to our rural communities because often, those students and teachers are left behind.
